Course Introduction

The Graduate Certificate in Garden Design provides a solid understanding in garden design theory and practice, horticultural principles and of plant use and selection in design. Sustainability thinking and practices are also covered in the course.

 

Who Should Attend?

This course provides a qualification in garden design and has been developed for:

• people currently employed in the horticultural and landscape industries and

• for those contemplating a career change.

 

Course Objectives

The course aims to be the industry standard for professionals working in garden design.  The course has a key focus in developing the student's capacity to consult with a client about desired outcomes and to turn these into a practical and successful garden design.

On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Garden Design, students should be able to:

• Display skills, knowledge, understanding and competence in the area of residential garden design.

• Assess and analyse problems and determine appropriate solutions in the preparation of designs for gardens.

• Develop a holistic approach to garden design through a thorough understanding of the horticultural, landscape and design requirements.

• Display graphic interpretation skills in the preparation of landscape plans.

 

Entry Requirements

Entry into the course will be based upon completion of:

• an undergraduate degree; or

• a relevant TAFE or Higher Education Advanced Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of full-time, documented relevant work experience or equivalent; or

• a relevant TAFE Diploma and 4.5 years of full-time, documented relevant work experience, or equivalent; or

• 6 years of full-time professional relevant work experience which demonstrates the capacity to successfully undertake the course.

2012 fees $2,600 per subject.

Course Structure and Delivery Dates

The Graduate Certificate in Garden Design consists of four subjects, 12.5 credit points each (50 points).

Semester 1 (click on the links below for more information)

Landscape Design (HORT90034), commencing 29 February 2012

Horticultural Principles (HORT90036), commencing 1 March 2012


Semester 2

Landscape Construction and Graphics (HORT90035), commencing 25 July 2012


Plants for Designed Landscapes (HORT90037), commencing 26 July 2012


The course is delivered via lectures, workshops and practicals during evening classes and some weekend activities and field visits.


Time: Classes are held from 6pm to 9pm.

When: Classes are held Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Duration: This course can be completed in one or two years.

1 Year: 2 subjects per semester.

2 Years: 1 subject per semester.

 

Assessment

Each subject is formally assessed to meet the requirements of University accreditation. Assessment is designed to be practical and relevant to industry professionals.

Higher Awards

Successful applicants will be provided full credit (50 points) on admission into the Master of Urban Horticulture. http://www.horticulture.unimelb.edu.au/

 

Online Learning Management System

Students are issued with login detail to access the Online Learning Management system, known as ePortal.

The system is a main point of communication between the coordinator and other students enrolled.  If there is required pre-reading, it is made available to view and print from ePortal.  Students can also upload assignments directly to ePortal for assessment.

Information uploaded to ePortal such as assignments, and communication between the coordinator is strictly confidential and private.

The closing date for applications has been extended to 20 February 2012.



PLEASE NOTE: There are vacancies for Horticultural Principles (semester 1) and Plants for Designed Landscapes (semester 2). However, we are not accepting any further applications for Landscape Design (semester 1) and Landscape Construction and Graphics (semester 2) as we have reached capacity for these two subjects.


 

Master of Urban Horticulture Students

There are limited spots for Master of Urban Horticulture students to enrol in the following two subjects:

• Landscape Design (HORT90034) and

• Landscape Construction and Graphics (HORT90035)

These subjects can be credited towards your MUH course plan (as discipline electives).

These are full-fee subjects and fees must be paid up-front.

The application opening date for MUH students is 12 December 2012. Please complete the Single Subject Application form in the link under How to Apply.
