Course Introduction
The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound is a distance program that is offered to practicing medical professionals who wish to obtain further expertise in medical ultrasound for clinical practice.
The Diploma course provides a diagnostic level knowledge base in valve assessment, complex cardiovascular pathology, comprehensive reporting and a greater focus on Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE).
Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to:
- To provide the knowledge base to become competent at a diagnostic level of echocardiography; and
- To provide the knowledge base to become competent in the specific requirements of a medical craft group of medical ultrasound use
Graduate Attributes
Graduates of this course should:
- Have a diagnostic-level understanding for echocardiography including transoesophageal echocardiography.
- Have acquired additional knowledge within their discipline, and will be familiar with methods of applying ultrasound related knowledge in their clinical practice.
- Have a high consistency of knowledge between students within each craft group or discipline.
Interactive tutorials and case reviews will allow students to articulate their knowledge and test the capability for independent critical thought. By the end of the course, there will be testing of interpretation and problem-solving skills.

Applicants must:

Possess undergraduate qualifications sufficient to practice as a medical practitioner, such as MBBS or equivalent degrees, as a minimum entry requirement; AND have completed the Postgraduate Certificate of Clinical Ultrasound.
Fees
2012 Fees per 12.5 point subject is $1650.
Please note fees are subject to an annual increase.
Course Structure
To satisfy the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound, students must successfully complete a total of 100 points.

Mode of Delivery
Material for individual subjects will be delivered via a combination of the following mode:
- A remote learning component covering the content of each subject through tutorials and interactive case studies;

Step 2 - Attach Documentation
a) Academic Transcript
An Academic Transcript is the official record of your studies at a University. It details the courses you have completed, the awards granted and includes the majors, programs or streams you have completed. Your Academic Transcript lists all subjects undertaken with the corresponding mark and grade, arranged by the years in which the study was undertaken. It also shows your full name.
All students should have received an official transcript from each University at which they have been an enrolled student. The University of Melbourne requires all students to provide an original or certified copy of Academic Transcript to verify your academic history. No certificates will be accepted.
Note: Students that completed their undergraduate studies (only) at the University of Melbourne are not required to submit Academic Transcripts.
b) Resume
Prospective students must attach a copy of their current resume outlining their work experience which is relevant to the course.
Step 3 – Meet the English Language Requirements
All applicants must meet the english language requirements of the University of Melbourne.
If applicants have completed their undergraduate studies in a non-english speaking country, they may meet this requirement by sitting either the IELTS/TOEFL test and achieving the applicable test scores in accordance with admission to Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science courses, or if they have completed the following:
- Completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
- Attained a registration with the Australian Medical Associate (AMA) which requires an IELTS score of 7.0 or greater
- Completed a Fellowship in an Australian hospital as this requires both a high level of English competency, and instruction is intensive and solely in English (such as ANZCA or JFICM etc).
