Course Introduction

The Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies (International Baccalaureate®) – Diploma Programme Stream, has been designed to provide teachers with theoretical and practical skills related to the (IB) Diploma Programme and IB education more broadly. This postgraduate study comprising four compulsory subjects, which can be taken as part of a Master of Education, provides students with a balance between theory and practice and assist them to integrate educational research and DP pedagogy into a supportive and challenging learning environment that considers local, national and international perspectives. The course covers topics such as international-mindedness, student-driven inquiry, assessment and learning, and reflective practice.

On successful completion of the course, graduates are eligible for the IB Teacher Award Level 1.

Course Fee

$7,250 per person (fees include all tuition, course materials, on-line access to course and additional resources)

 

Course Structure

To satisfy the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate in International Baccalaureate® (PYP) students must successfully complete 4 core subjects (each 12.5 credit points) a total of 50 points.

The core subjects are:

Introduction to the IB Diploma Programme
The Diploma Programme Hexagon
Assessment & Reporting in the IB Diploma
IB Diploma Specialist Disciplines

 

Assessment

Students are required to participate in weekly modules, maintain an ongoing reflective journal and complete a number of assessment tasks. The typical requirement is a minimum of 4000 words of assessment over a number of items. Assessment tasks will typically include personal responses to course materials, IB programme materials, research and other literature, and the application in school contexts. This may include group assessment tasks.

 

Course Coordinator Details

The International Baccalaureate® courses designed and offered through the University of Melbourne are led by Associate Professor Kay Margetts, who has been instrumental in positioning the University of Melbourne as the first in the world to offer an academic qualification in IB education.

 

Delivery Dates

The proposed delivery schedule involves four individual subjects delivered sequentially over a period of around 18 to 20 months, with each subject delivered over approximately 3 months with a short break between each subject to ensure adequate time for content delivery, engagement in learning tasks, reflection and the preparation of assessment items.

Articulation in to higher awards

Students who complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (International Baccalaureate®) are eligible to articulate into the Master of Education (International Baccalaureate®) for which they may receive up to 50 points credit.
