Short Course in Identifying and Managing Psychological and Psychiatric Disorder in Cancer Patients
Course Introduction
This two day intensive workshop will explore the range of psychological and psychiatric syndromes in the context of cancer- and treatment- related variables, developmental age and socio-cultural factors. The presentation of the material will be in the form of didactic teaching around clinical case discussion, video material and accounts of the lived experience from patients and family members.
Areas that will be covered include: screening and assessment, distress, depression, anxiety, demoralization, PTSD, grief, personality disorders, substance abuse, co-morbid disorders, organic disorders including delirium and cerebral pathology, psychotropic use and psychiatric effects of non-psychotropic medications and the experience of the health professional.
Participants will throughout the course be introduced to a hypothesis-driven mode of enquiry and identification of syndromes.
Course Objectives
- To help health professionals working with cancer patients to recognise and develop an understanding of the management of a variety of psychological and psychiatric syndromes commonly seen in cancer patients.
- To develop an understanding of the appropriate responses and referral pathways for each disorder.
Who Should Attend
Health professionals who may benefit from this course include psychologists, social workers, nurses, allied health professionals and non-psychiatric medical staff.

The Psycho-oncology short courses are developed and conducted by the Psychosocial Cancer Care Department of St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and invited associates.
