Course Description
Neurological diseases represent an increasing health burden on society. The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Burden of Disease Report 2008 highlighted the fact that ‘neurological disorders are an important cause of mortality and constitute 12% of total deaths globally’.
Closely linked to this finding are the rapid advances in diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases which provide great potential for improved neurological health. It is only by embracing a solid understanding of these clinical advances that neurologists can provide the best treatments for their patients.
UoM NSTC is an initiative of the University of Melbourne in association with The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Shanghai People’s No 1 Hospital. This course is generously sponsored by EBEWE Pharma.
The course covers training in the following neurology subspecialties:
-
acute stroke management
-
epilepsy
-
neuroimmunology (with an emphasis on Multiple Sclerosis)
-
neuroradiology
-
movement disorders
-
neuro-ophthalmology
-
neuromuscular disease
-
Neuropsychiatry
-
Neurogenetics
The teaching format includes lectures, workshops and question & answer sessions. All educational material will be provided. At the end of the second week, attendees will undergo a formal assessment. On successful completion of the assessment, a certificate of attainment will be provided by the University of Melbourne.
Benefits for course participants
The Neurology Subspecialty Training Course will provide intensive training, focused on the most up-to-date investigative and treatment paradigms of acute and chronic neurological disease.
A formal assessment will provide attendees with an evaluation of the extent to which they are utilising the most advanced neurological treatment, resulting in improvement of clinical performance.
Attendees will receive a certificate of achievement from the University of Melbourne.
Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with fellow peers and previous Alumni via the online ePortal system, which will provide academic materials, regular updates and an online forum for discussion.
In addition, the course will provide access to leading academic neurology researchers in Australia and will open up opportunities for potential research collaboration between Chinese and Australian Hospitals and with the soon to be completed Parkville Neuroscience Facility.
