The University of Melbourne is an Accredited Qualifying Body (AQB) for the Australian Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (AINDT).
Course Introduction
Melbourne Consulting and Custom Programs at the University of Melbourne manages’ the delivery of Thermographic training specific to the Pest Industry. It also offers industry accredited training in Infrared Thermography for Condition Monitoring Levels 1 and 2.
Training is presented by a consortium of industry experts, who have been delivering Level 1 and Level 2 training in Infrared Thermography for Condition Monitoring for over 10 years, in accordance with the Australian Standards AS3998 and AS3669.
Training for Pest Managers was offered for the first time in 2007, in response to the public demand for thermographic training in this area.
Australian Standards for Thermographic training and accreditation by the Australian Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (AINDT) in the pest industry are currently being developed. Our industry experts are assisting in the creation of these standards. Once completed, these standards will form the basis of our ongoing training program into pest management.
Course Objectives
Thermography for Pest Managers has the prima facie purpose of providing hands on practical training experience for managers in the pest control industry or those considering entering the industry.
This course is suitable for both experienced users of Infrared (IR) Cameras, who will learn enhanced techniques and better use of their equipment from the expertise of the presenters; as well as for those that have never used Infrared (IR) Cameras before.

Entry Requirements
No specific entry requirements exist, however final application approval is determined by The University of Melbourne. Applications are assessed on a case by case basis.
It is recommended that Participants will gain the most from this course if they bring their own infrared camera and laptop with appropriate software loaded, so that they can download thermographic images. Participants without their own cameras will be able to share equipment with others and/or the presenters.
Course Fee
The 2008 Course Fee is yet to be finalised, however it will be approximately:
- AUD $1,600.00* (plus GST)

Course Structure
The Thermography for Pest Managers course is delivered in a single 24 hour teaching block over three(3) consecutive days.
The 2008 course will be held in Queensland (Brisbane), whereas the 2007 course was held in Victoria (Melbourne)
- DAY 1
Understanding and using infrared cameras,
The theory and practice,
Taking and saving images,
Downloading images into reports, and
Report requirements and preparing reports. - DAY 2
The Biology and Science of Termites and their Detection with
Thermal Cameras,
Pest management programs,
Termite biology and termite identification, and
Practical investigation - using IR cameras to detect termite nests. - DAY 3
Finding Pests in Building Structures and Reporting on Findings,
Field use of IR cameras in pest inspections of buildings,
Preparing visual and IR images for comparison,
Preparing inspection reports with IR images to AS standards, and
Insurance and liability issues.
