Short Course in Psychotherapies for Cancer Patients and their Families
Course Introduction
Psycho-oncology has become a subspecialty of oncology with its own body of knowledge contributing to cancer care. Its broad reach and relevance has evolved over the past decades with applications at all points on the cancer continuum from early detection through to management of the psychological aspects of palliative and end-of-life care. Understanding psychotherapeutic approaches for patients with cancer and their families is a critical skill for medical and allied health professionals.
For Clinicians involved in psychotherapy with cancer patients this workshop provides an opportunity to develop specific skills and ideas and to benefit from discussion with other therapists.
Course Objectives
In this two day interactive program, participants will discuss different models of psychotherapy for patients with cancer at all points on the cancer continuum. They will be exposed to practical demonstrations of therapeutic interactions, observe skilled therapists at work, participate in role play with trained actors and receive practical feedback to improve their skills.
Who Should Attend
This specialist course has been designed for qualified and experienced psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, social workers and nurses to provide an opportunity to learn about the specific psychotherapeutic approaches to working with people with cancer at all stages along the cancer pathway and the application of these skills in a clinical setting.
Academic Team
The psycho-oncology short courses are developed and conducted by the Psychosocial Cancer Care Department, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and invited associates, therapists and actors.The coordinator of the program is Dr Dianne A Clifton, psychiatrist and Medical Director of Psychosocial Cancer Care, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne.
