Short Course in Palliative Care and Mental Health Interfaces
Course Introduction
This one-day interactive workshop will address the complex issues of providing palliative care to patients who suffer from serious mental illness, substance abuse problems and personality disorders in both inpatient and community settings. It will utilize case material to assist clinicians in the navigation of the services involved in the provision of care and will provide opportunity for open discussion of participants' experience. Other issues covered will include the differentiation of mental states, principles and guidelines of the different services, medications used and their side-effects, non-compliance and refusal of care, cognitive impairment and capacity, ethical and legal matters, equity and autonomy, safety issues, crisis management and the involvement of families.
Who Should Attend
The workshop has been developed after a half-day pilot project to canvas the needs of both palliative care and mental health clinicians of all disciplines and will be of interest and benefit to health providers in all relevant areas.
