Planning for Walking in Activity Centres: because shoppers are pedestrians
A one day workshop delivered by Mr Nigel Flannigan (Senior fellow, UoM) in partnership with Dr Rodney Tolley (Hon Research Fellow, Staffordshire Uni)
Dr Rodney Tolley is an experienced consultant in the field of active, sustainable transport. In August 2009 he was nominated in the top 50 of the World’s sustainable transport ‘heroes’, “the extraordinary creative people who over the last decades have led the way in the uphill fight to sustainable transportation, sustainable cities and sustainable lives.”
He taught for over 30 years at Staffordshire University in the UK, where he published widely in the field of non-motorised transport planning. He edited three editions of ''The Greening of Urban Transport: Planning for Walking and Cycling in Western Cities', which has been described as the 'bible' of green mode planning.
Rodney is the Conference Director of Walk21, a not-for-profit which raises international awareness of walking issues and supports professionals in the delivery of best practice. He chaired the Programme Committee for the first ten international Walk21 walking conferences, including New York in October 2009 and has been central to the development of the International Charter on Walking.
As an independent consultant he has led hundreds of workshops, walkabouts and master classes in communities across the world. His focus is primarily on walkability, accessibility, wayfinding, and pedestrian amenity in public spaces, streets and arterial roads. Through these activities he has a unique oversight of developing practice in walking in the UK, North America, Europe and across the world.
