Bachelor of Medical Science

International Research Training Opportunities for Undergraduate Medical Students

Course Introduction

The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, a leader in biomedicine in Australia, is located at the centre of one of the world’s most concentrated biomedical research precincts, close to Medical Research Institutes, tertiary referral hospitals with University Departments of clinical medicine and private sector biomedical businesses. The Faculty is renowned for the breadth and depth of its research, the application of this research to clinical practice and public health, and the development of new and innovative treatments to reduce mortality and improve quality of life.

The University of Melbourne’s Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc) Program is offered to selected medical schools as a research training year for undergraduate medical students who have successfully passed at least the first 2.5 years of their medical course and who’s academic performance ranks them in the top third of their course.  This coursework program has developed from the University’s outstanding position as Australia’s leading bioscience precinct and one of the world’s major biomedical research hubs.  The BMedSc course is available to students whose University has chosen to participate in the course.  The course requires one year of full time study in Australia, and students graduate with a Bachelor of Medical Science degree from the University of Melbourne.
