Determinants of Women's Health
Description
Divided into two components, the first half of this subject considers major psychological, psychoanalytic, socio cultural and feminist theories on women, their role in society and their health outcomes.
The second half of the subject considers the health effects related to women's current social position including physical and sexual abuse, the feminisation of poverty, the double shift of paid and unpaid work and the effect of occupational and social positioning on health.

Generic skills students will develop
Students who successfully complete this subject should have:
- developed a critical understanding of the various theoretical explanations of women's higher rates of certain physical and mental health problems
- understood a gendered, social determinants model of health and critically appraise research evidence on the role of poverty, violence and unpaid caring work in women's health status
