Description
This subject explores the current debates on reproductive health and reproductive rights. Topics include:
Whose rights? Individual versus state: An overview; Family planning and issues of spacing: Global and local agendas; Social and psychological issues in infertility; New reproductive technologies: Access and ethical issues; Body and self; Reproductive health and minority groups (indigenous and migrant groups); Reproductive rights and the intellectually disabled: Policies and program issues; Cross cultural issues in reproductive rights: Case studies; Negotiation and advocacy of reproductive rights.

Generic skills students will develop
Students who successfully complete this subject should:
- Be able to critically analyse the main issues involved in the provision of reproductive health within the context of culture, age, stage in the life cycle, marital status, economic conditions, religious and ethnic identity and social circumstances.
- Have developed advanced written and oral communication skills
- Have an advanced understanding of human rights, and their relevance to reproductive and sexual health
- Developed a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between structural factors impacting on health and health outcomes
- Have developed the ability to explore the cultural issues implicated and the tensions between universal human rights, cultural rights and women's rights
- Demonstrate enhanced critical thinking and analytical skills

Twenty-four hours of lectures/seminars/tutorials in the intensive period, supported by additional preliminary tutorials to a maximum of five hours.
