Social Inclusion Policy and Practice
Description
The subject engages with contemporary policy and research practice in the area of social inclusion, in Australian and international contexts. It focuses on key analytical and practical challenges relating to the development, implementation and assessment of policies, programs and practice within a social inclusion framework.
The subject also examines new theoretical contexts linked to social inclusion which are informing current organisational changes and approaches to program development and practice. By taking this subject, students will develop a critically informed understanding of social inclusion policy and practice with relevance to a broad range of organisational and research contexts.

Objectives
- Provide an understanding of policy and practice issues and approaches in the context of social exclusion and inclusion.
- Provide an understanding of new theoretical contexts linked to social inclusion which are informing current organisational changes and approaches to program development and practice.
- The opportunity for students to apply their understanding of policy and practice in social inclusion to issues of direct practical relevance in the fields of social inclusion and social policy more broadly.
- Opportunity for students to undertake assessment tasks with direct practical and applied relevance in the area of social inclusion.

Students who successfully complete this subject should have:
- achieved a capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning; and
- achieved an ability to incorporate theoretical principles and concepts into professional practice.

Contact Time
24 hours of lectures/seminars/workshops. In addition to face-to-face teaching time of 24 hours, students should expect to undertake a minimum of 100 hours research, reading, writing and general study to complete this subject successfully.
Assessment
- One research essay of 1000 words, on a question as guided by the subject co-ordinator, due 2 weeks after the delivery of the subject. (100% total weighting for assessed students).
- One research essay of 4000 words, on a question as guided by the subject co-ordinator, due 8 weeks after the delivery of the subject. (100% total weighting for assessed students).

Course Fee
The 2011 course fee for the single subject is:
- $2,420 for the assessed stream; or
- $1,980 (GST inclusive) for the non-assessed stream.
Course materials are included – a pre-reading folder, course notes, Student Services Handbook and Study Guide. A pen and notepad are also supplied. Catering is provided at morning and afternoon tea and at lunch times. Please advise of any specific dietary requirements.
Students will not receive their results until course fees are paid.
