Objectives
The objectives of the course are:
- To provide a supervised comprehensive cadaver dissection.
- To provide training in surgical anatomy to the standard required for the Part One Examination of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Generic skills students will develop
By the end of the course students will have:
- Performed a comprehensive dissection of the human body; and
- Knowledge of surgical Anatomy to the standard required for the Part One Examination of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Mode of Delivery
Classes are held in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Melbourne's Parkville campus. There are two classes each week: Monday and Thursday evenings 6pm-10pm.
Tuition over the 18 week period involved lecture/tutorials and practical sessions (including specimen workshops and cadaver dissection) totaling 160 contact hours. There is also opportunity for additional independent dissection if desired.

There are two classes each week: Monday and Thursday evenings 6pm-10pm, with optional 'catch-up'/revision sessions on Saturday mornings.
Assessment
Oral Examination (20 minutes). Flag race examination (60 minutes). Fifty per cent. Standard questions will be based on knowledge of surgically applied anatomy appropriate to that required for the SET Surgical Sciences Examinations of RACS. The oral examination format includes specimens, bones, imaging and surface projections of the chosen speciality areas. The flag race examination format includes identification of labelled specimens of the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, upper limb and lower limb. Students are required to pass all components to graduate.
Special consideration
If a situation outside your control prevents you from sitting for the exam, you should apply for special consideration. Applications for special consideration are made on the Student Portal no later than 3 days after your exam and will be assessed by the Examiners Committee.
You are strongly advised to attend your examinations unless you are physically incapable of doing so. Missing an examination does not automatically entitle you to a 'special' exam.

Supplementary Exams
Supplementary exams are a form of further assessment, in which you complete a second, additional formal exam during a fixed exam period.
Supplementary exams are only offered to students who received a mark of between 40 and 49 out of 100.
